W.E. GLADSTONE: THE GRAND OLD MAN IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

An exhibition celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of William Ewart Gladstone is currently on display at the Weston Gallery, Lakeside Arts Centre, University Park (until 21 March). Its academic curator, Dr Richard Gaunt of the University of Nottingham’s School of History has brought together original documents, cartoons and other images to illustrate Gladstone’s life and his long association with Nottinghamshire, Nottingham and the Park.

Dr Gaunt has published extensively on 19th century British politics, with a particular focus on Nottinghamshire figures. In this talk he will explain the link between Gladstone and the Dukes of Newcastle, who owned Nottingham Park, and reveal the influence of the “Grand Old Man” on some aspects of the city, and the Park, in the late 19th century.

Dr Dorothy Johnston, Keeper of the Manuscripts at the University of Nottingham, will extend the account with a review of the archival resources at the University which enable us to chart the residential development of the Park and its adjacent areas during the Gladstone era.
