There is an art exhibition at the Friar Lane Gallery from today until the 23rd October. I have never seen anything like it in all my life. I don't know why I got invited to the opening but I would like to thank whoever was responsible. It was simply breathtaking.

Does anyone know where the Lace-making machinery manufacturer Ernest Jardine used to live? He went on to buy Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset in 1907 where the curator would be interested to have more information about his past. If you know anything about him, please let me know at webmaster@theparknottingham.co.uk

Can anyone help with this request? Please reply to Keely Parrack if you can.
I am researching for a novel I'm revising, and trying to find out information on the history of the Park, especially that surrounding some drawings/paintings discovered fairly recently in a grotto or cave. I think the pictures were mostly faces and animals, some of the structure has collapsed.
I'll be in flying into London next week, (I used to live in The Park, but now live in California.) I'd love to see the pictures if they exist.
I'd really appreciate any help,
Thanks,
Keely Parrack

The police are reporting a spate of burglaries at the southern end of The Park. They are probably perpetrated by people who have appointments at the probation office on Castle Boulevard. The Park Beat Officer, PC 672 Ian Taylor, advises vigilance and asks that you call him on his mobile 07792 437368 if you see anything suspicious.
Thursday, July 13, 2006 - 12:27 AM

A burglar entered our house today while we were at home. She is white, early 20's, 5' 4", with blond hair and a distinctive squint. She is known to the police and is sometimes accompanied by a toddler or infant. She is very calm and prepared to chat for a while with a variety of semi-plausible excuses for entering a property. She has spent time in prison but apparently does not resist when apprehended. Keep an eye out for her and keep your doors and windows shut.

This website now has a new domain name. I did not have ownership of the previous domain and it became necessary to change it rather than continue with the risk of it being withdrawn. The new domain name should have some positive impact in that it more accurately identifies the site as a UK based one and this will enhance its performance with search engines.
The discussion forum has been temporarily disabled after Turkish hackers used it to deface the site over new year. When I find a new and more secure version of the software, it will be re-instated. I apologise for the interruption of this service.

My name is Ben Price. I am at present on a quest to play "Fives" at every Fives Court in this country within the next ten tears. I have also untertaken some research into the whereabouts of Fives Courts past and present. I recently did an internet search on "Fives Nottingham" and I came across an entry for planning permission in 1909 and i quote:
ref NPE P3/218/1-2 "two plans for two Fives Courts T Cartwright at Tattershall Drive1909"
This was a Nottingham University Historical Records website.
Could any resident let me know if they were
1. Ever Built
2. Still in existence
3. Converted into garage, house etc.
4. Still being used
5. Has anyone got a church buttress in their garage or living room and wonder what it is. (Eton Fives has a church butress sticking out in the middle of the court -believe it or not) see Eton Fives Website.
They must be on Tattershall drive somewhere.
Thanks Ben Price

Residents of Newcastle Drive are concerned about the proposed Canning Circus Pedestrian Scheme. They complain that the proposals for The Ropewalk will increase the volume of traffic on their road and have an adverse impact on safety and the quality of the environment. Anyone who feels that they may be affected by this scheme should contact Stephen Hyde on stephen@hydemail.co.uk. The more letters the council receives, the greater the impact. If you would like to read the text of the objection letter sent to the City Council, please click on the title of this story or on "Read more..." below.

Further to the article in Park News about the new University helpline for those affected by anti-social student behaviour, my immediate neighbours and I have had the opportunity to test the system. Last night between 3am and 3.30am a large group of very drunk and aggressive male students were causing significant disruption in Hope Drive - shouting, blocking the street and overturning wheely bins. A number of us have called the University's Manager of off-Campus Student Affairs, Melanie Futer to register our protest. I encourage others to do the same. The 24-hour number is 0115 8468666. I will keep you informed of developments.

From Spike.
There is a program tonight (March 17th) on BBC2 at 21:00 called "If things don't get better". It paints a picture of the UK in 2014 when the gap between rich and poor has grown. After a spate of petty crimes the residents of one London community decide to cordon off their road with private security guards to prevent further problems, and then the trouble really starts. I think this program will be very interesting given our unique point of view from within The Park.
This is a link to the programs page
I would suggest that we all take a look.

Every Sunday night, dozens of cars gather for the races around the Broadmarsh Centre and up and down Castle Boulevard. I've often thought it was suprising that the police didn't seem very interested in what was a regular event where speeds of up to 70mph were achieved. The racers had their own website at one time and I even heard one of them complaining at a public consultation that the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh would spoil their circuit!
Anyway, it looks like the police have decided to do something about it after all.

This website has now moved to a new server. You may find that a very few messages in the discussion forums have been lost. I'll try and get these back but I'm not sure if it will work. Other than that, the process seemed to go quite smoothly.
You may find that the site seems slow for the next week. This is due to a network error which will be corrected.

Wheeldon Homes are currently making life a misery for residents of Hope Drive. They are building a block of flats called The Gallery and their incredibly noisy fork-lift and trucks have been abusing the access given to them by estate office. They ignore the one-way system and travel in both directions continuously from 8am to 5pm. If you would like to complain to them, you can contact the construction manager Bob Bailey on 01332 388400.
The estate office has been informed and are believed to be taking steps to prevent further abuse by Wheeldon.

For the last 4 months or so there has been a poll on this website asking about peoples experience of crime.
There were only 36 votes and judging by some of the discussions in the discussion forum, the results were not typical for many people, particularly those living around the boundaries of the estate. There is now a new poll which asks how much extra people would be prepared to pay to enhance security in the park. Please also join in the discussions in the forum.
Note: Click on "Read more..." to get the results of the previous poll.

The City Council elections are on May 1st. The Park ward has disappeared and becomes Radford and Park. At the last local election in 2000, only 25% exercised their right to vote.
In January this year I emailed our two councillors, Zahoor Mir and David Trimble and invited them to join this website. Not only did they not join, they did not even reply. They will be contesting seats in Dunkirk and Lenton ward this time round. The candidates for our ward can be found in this list on the council website. Your local polling station will be at the Castle.

After the website was hacked, the level of service from my former webhosting company deteriorated dramatically and eventually the server failed altogether. I've now moved the site to a larger and hopefully more professional company. I apologise for the recent downtime, it was out of my control.

TheParkEstate.com was a casualty of war on Thursday when Saudi Arabian "hackers" defaced the front page with a political message relating to the situation in the Middle East. If you would like to read what they had to say, I have preserved it in this link here. Be warned that the message contains obscenities and anti-US/Israeli sentiments. The attack made the national news. Unfortunately I eventually had to resort to a 10 day old backup of the site, so we have lost 10 members and quite a few forum messages. Please resubmit anything that you had added in the last 10 days.
Normal service is now resumed (I hope). PaulH

My webserver is being upgraded to a much more powerful system. There will inevitably be problems and loss of service during the next week or so. Please bear with us.

After receiving a number of email messages, I have increased the font size used by the website in the hope of providing an easier read to those residents with impaired vision.
Keep the feedback coming and I will endeavor to respond.

Your webmaster is back from a weeks holiday in Egypt, having stayed at the Al Moudira Hotel which was very nice indeed and unusually cheap due to the immanence of war in the region. Beautiful blue skies, great food, friendly people and all the temples and tombs that you are ever likely to need. I feel very refreshed!
It seems that we now have 51 members, having added a further 17 while I was away. I will try and do another mailshot this weekend and then the whole of the estate will have been covered.
Thanks to all those who have emailed me with comments and suggestions, I'll get back to you when I've cleared the backlog in my inbox.

We now have 34 members on the website. I'll do another mailshot in a week or so, of about 1000 leaflets this time, which should get the numbers up to about 60. Then we will have to start getting more inventive since my target is to get at least 300 registered users.
Thanks to all the new members for joining. Please use the discussion forums and if you are having trouble using them, let me know and I will try and write a users guide for the Getting Started section.
Thanks

The affectionaletly known 'Tunnel' route connecting the Estate to Derby Road belongs to the Council: but they are reluctant to maintain the lighting or improve the surface (which is dangerous at the bottom of the steps and poor underfoot throughout).
The reluctance is not the result of clever urban control nor hard local goverment choices: they just didn't realise they owned it and are now a bit surprised that they may have to find some money to fix it (since the lights broke and people started to complain).
Should we not be doing something about letting the Council know that this is unacceptable? The Park Estate are so convinced that the Council will do nothing that they published in Park News (Nov 2002) that they are looking to fund the lighting themselves! That means us again! The Park maintains its own highways and lighting - why can't the Council maintain the only access they are responsible for into the Park?

The Park Estate was once a deer park. In 1798 a poacher by the name of Thomas Booth employed an elaborate scheme to kill a fine stag which was often to be found near the present location of the estate office. He persuaded a friend to discharge a gun in Tattershall Drive, thus creating a diversion which attracted the attention of the keepers. He was then able to kill the stag and drag it's body into Brewhouse Yard and safety. Booth is buried in St Nicholas' Churchyard. You can read about this story and much more at the excellent Links With Old Nottingham.

Watch out for these promotional business cards. I have just had 1000 printed on very advantageous terms at printing.com in town. I'm going to spread a few around and then maybe do a mail drop around the estate with dougal. If you would like a few cards to give to your neighbours and friends, please get in touch. There may be as many as 2500 adults in The Park so our current total of 17 registered users is not yet terribly impressive. But you have to start somewhere and time will tell. Spread the word! Thank you to everyone who has registered, I'm now going to start promoting the site more widely. I also hope to update the "Getting Started" guide with some more useful content soon.
Please use the forums and upload you photos to the gallery and we will see if this can become a useful community resource.
